Principal Analyst and Policy Officer

Salary: £41,380

Job reference: London councils/TP/101/44

Closing date: 1st December 2023

There has never been a more exciting - or challenging - time to work in local government, especially finance. We are in a period of significant change and opportunity.

Change, because after a decade of funding reductions, councils are now starting to see an increase in funding which is needed to deal with rising costs due to continued high inflation and rising demand for services following the COVID-19 pandemic and cost of living pressures.

Opportunity, because London’s boroughs have a real opportunity to shape how local communities build for the future – and change how local services are funded.

London’s local councils spend over £30 billion each year and invest billions of pounds of capital in housing, schools, parks, and other infrastructure. They are big and complex organisations that make a real difference in the daily lives of 9 million Londoners.

London Councils’ finance policy team seeks to ensure London boroughs have the resources they need to deliver for London’s residents. We have to be compelling and persuasive in argument, fully fluent in data, information and evidence in order to influence government and policy makers in Whitehall.

Requirements

In this role, it will be your job to provide robust data analysis and evidence that is vital to the strength and credibility of our campaigns. You will need to demonstrate outstanding numerical skills and a proven ability to analyse and interpret complex sets of data (financial, demographic and socioeconomic). Proficiency with Excel is essential.

You will have excellent written and oral presentation skills, in particular the ability to present financial and technical information clearly and concisely to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

You will be working closely with policy colleagues across all policy areas - from adult social care and public health, to children’s services, housing and transport - as well as with our media and public affairs team.

This role offers a position at the forefront of local government finance in London.
