Help lead governance at the heart of one of the UK's most visible, complex and exciting councils.
Westminster City Council is delivering ambitious change through its Fit for the Future priorities - strengthening governance, improving culture, and ensuring the organisation is equipped to meet the challenges of a fast-moving political and financial environment. We are now seeking a strategic and confident Director of Law & Monitoring Officer to play a central role in that journey.
The Role:
Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will provide organisation-wide leadership for legal and governance services while fulfilling the statutory responsibilities of Monitoring Officer. You will help lead a governance reset, strengthen member-officer relationships, and ensure the council operates with integrity, clarity and strong professional standards. This is a highly visible corporate role - one that requires sound judgement, political awareness, and a pragmatic, solution-focused approach.
You will be a credible senior leader with strong governance experience and the confidence to operate in a complex political environment. You may already be a Monitoring Officer or Director, or ready to step up into your first statutory role.
Above all, you will bring:
- Strong professional judgement and political awareness
- A collaborative, team-centred leadership style
- The ability to build trusted relationships while maintaining independence
- A commitment to high standards of governance and organisational culture
- A pragmatic, outcome-focused approach to leadership
Why Westminster:
This is a rare opportunity to shape governance and culture in one of the country's most high-profile councils - and to play a key role in delivering safe, effective and ambitious public services for a global city.
At Westminster, equity, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to who we are and how we serve our communities. We are committed to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of the city we serve and to creating an environment where everyone can thrive. Inclusion is something we will not back away from, and it's instilled in our culture, our values and our priorities.
If you are ready to lead with integrity, sound judgement and purpose and want to be a part of shaping the future of Westminster - we really want to hear from you.
