Assistant Director: Corporate Improvement & Customer Services

Up to £92k

This role offers the opportunity to take the lead on an ambitious corporate change initiative. Your contribution will be central in reshaping how the council engages with its customers, to deliver more responsive, consistent and efficient services. Our focus is on directing more customer contact to a single point of delivery, harnessing better technology to reduce costs and making the customer experience quicker and easier. It’s a change programme that is as much about hearts and minds as it is about process and systems, so it’s important that you can lead cultural as well as operational change.  We’ll want to hear about your past successes in people and programme management, but we will also want to understand how you will identify new opportunities and best practice that will benefit Reading.

As well as leading on our customer service transformation you will also be responsible for Policy and Performance Improvement, our Registrars’ Service, and be a key player in shaping our relationships with third sector providers – helping to foster a partnership environment that supports community resilience.

Recently named the second-fastest growing city in the UK, and already a regional powerhouse, Reading’s forward momentum is remarkable. High employment levels, a well-qualified local population, and an established and respected university all contribute to Reading’s appeal to inward investors. The Council is playing a central role in creating the right environment for growth and ensuring that benefits are reinvested to support financial sustainability and effectively dispersed to address inequality.

Team Reading is central to this making this happen – assembling a new management team across a range of services, to create consistently high expectations, shared corporate accountability and an unswerving focus on high quality services. We have already delivered £26m of savings, and we’re on track to deliver the remainder of our target. A £0.5bn capital programme will provide new school places, homes, transport infrastructure and investment. We’re redefining how the Council delivers, influences and brokers on behalf of our community. For those who want to be at the vanguard of modern local government: Reading is where it’s happening.
