Hackney Council is looking for someone to lead a new team within our housing service to focus on resident safety. You will advise on all aspects of asbestos management and compliance, helping us make the borough cleaner and safer. This is an important part of our work to make Hackney a place for everyone.
As Housing Services Asbestos Manager, you will help us put in place procedures to manage any asbestos in our housing stock. Managing a team of four, your responsibilities will include surveying, inspections, removal and remediation. You will also oversee permits, training and ensure our work is in line with current legislation. You will lead on all asbestos related matters, from developing new policies to emergency response and contingency planning.
Housing is a top priority in Hackney. Inner London is experiencing intense pressure on housing stock with competing demands on space, a growing population and rising prices. Hackney Council manages over 30,000 properties across the borough. Our Housing team work hard to create safe, affordable homes for people who need them.
We need someone who can be our first point of contact for asbestos related issues. Someone able to provide specialist advice, knowledge and guidance. You will need at least five years' relevant experience, including asbestos management, risk assessments and investigations. Your background should include a broad range of design, construction and operations work. You should have in-depth knowledge of managing projects and developing proposals to deal with asbestos.
Your technical understanding will include interpreting surveyor's reports, analysing lab results and creating action plans to mitigate risk. Escalating concerns to Health and Safety boards, and others, as appropriate. Day to day you will need to liaise with contractors, create management reports and provide Quality Assurance of works to ensure our compliance.
You must be analytical and organised, able to stay level-headed under pressure and calm in an emergency. You will need effective communication skills and be able liaise with a range of stakeholders. This role needs someone who can show initiative, who likes pioneering new approaches and can lead performance improvements for their team.
You must stay up to date with current legislation and be ambitious to help us become a beacon of best practice. You should be a certified competent person BOHS CCP (Asbestos), with P402 or P405 and have completed the S301 training. This role will split time between office work and site visits, you should have a flexible approach as ocaasional out of hours work may be required.
