The role

Are you passionate about strong communities that diverse groups can call home and that value the contributions of all their members? Do you have a strong track record of developing communities and groups and experience of making change in an organisation on equality and diversity issues?

We are looking for a skilled Communities Officer (Equality and Diversity), able to coordinate the Council's work with diverse groups to reduce inequalities. You will join a team which includes colleagues addressing inequalities in deprived wards of the city, working with Community Associations to stimulate active community involvement and administering the Council's significant grants and commissioning programme. You will develop the capacity of emerging groups and support them to engage with the Council, improve partnership working as well as build the Council's knowledge and skills to engage effectively with diverse groups and inequalities.

You will have a flexible approach. Your experience and skills equip you to combine hands on relationship building, community development work, advisory support to senior Council officers and elected Members, and deputising as required for the Communities Manager. You will have an ability to make complex concepts simple and enthuse and enable others to embed them in the work of the organisation.

The purpose of the Communities Officer (Equality and Diversity) role is:

  • To support specific communities to organise and to work with the Council and other key service providers.
  • To build and improve partnerships with community groups that are under-represented in service provision.
  • To provide expert advice and develop Council capacity on equality and diversity issues in service provision and community engagement.
