About

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) is one of twenty five ministerial government departments.  We lead on behalf of Government in the following areas:

  • Housing, including building more homes, improving the provision of social housing and ensuring the safety of high-rise residential buildings following the fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017.
  • Oversight of the local government system, including risk, finance and priority services such as Troubled Families and social care.
  • Promoting and supporting strong and integrated communities, and leading relationships with faith bodies and institutions.
  • Devolving powers and funding to local authorities and metro mayors, and supporting and helping local areas to develop and implement local economic strategies.  This includes oversight of the delivery of EU structural funds through the transition to Brexit.

The MHCLG Group consists of the core department and eleven Arms Length Bodies (ALBs).  Collectively we oversee £17bn of spend, of which just under £7bn is local government finance, and have over 3,000 full time equivalent staff.

MHCLG’s agenda has grown in size and significance.  The Spending Review, the new Government’s manifesto and plans have set us ambitious new plans for housing delivery; new Green Papers on integration and social housing and a final Industrial Strategy focused on place.  Work is well underway to develop a three year business plan that will set out what we need to do, the resources we need to deliver and how we will work most effectively

MHCLG is at the heart of the Government’s overall social and economic reform programme; a confident Department of State, respected across Whitehall and in local areas, for its skills and commitment to evidence-based policy making and professional delivery. All with the aim of creating great places for people to live and work – in all parts of the country and for all people.

We are known for being outward-facing and collaborative, and as a place which always welcomes newcomers.  We have a strong focus on diversity and inclusion and are keen to encourage people from all backgrounds – both inside and outside the Civil Service – to come and work with us.  This is why we have one of the most ethnically diverse and gender-neutral senior cadres in Whitehall and are always striving to improve the diversity of our most senior leaders.

We are ambitious for our people and we want our people – especially our senior leaders – to be ambitious for MHCLG and what we can achieve.
