About our Trust

Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust operates and manages the two hospitals in Mid Staffordshire – Stafford Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital . The Trust is one of the largest employers in the region, with approximately 3,000 staff.

From these two sites, the Trust provides a wide range of healthcare services – both medical and surgical – for the people of Stafford , Cannock , Rugeley and surrounding areas.

As a Trust running two hospital sites, in Stafford and Cannock, we employ 2800 staff in a range of clinical and non-clinical roles – running a hospital really is a team effort.

Overview of who we serve

The Trust provides general hospital services for the local population of over 300,000 people. It also provides some services, such as the rheumatology service, for a much wider catchment area.

History of the Trust

The Trust was authorised as a Foundation Trust on 1st February 2008 and became known as Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and the individual hospitals called Stafford Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital.

The Trust had formerly been called Mid Staffordshire General Hospitals NHS Trust since 1993.

Stafford site

When the Stafford site hospital was opened in 1983 it was named Stafford District General Hospital. It was part of two hospitals in Stafford, the other being Staffordshire General Infirmary. When the Infirmary closed in the early 1990s and services were transferred, the Trust Board considered suggestions of names from staff and the name for the Stafford site was changed to Staffordshire General Hospital.

Cannock site

Following the closure of the Chase Hospital, the current Cannock site opened in 1991 and was called Cannock Community Hospital. The name changed in the 1990s to Cannock Chase Hospital.
