The Independent Safeguarding Authority is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) based in Darlington.

A NDPB is a body which has a role in the processes of national Government, but is not a Government department, or part of one, and so operates at arms length from Ministers.

The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) has been created to help prevent unsuitable people from working with children and vulnerable adults.  We will assess every person who wants to work or volunteer with vulnerable people.

Applicants will be assessed using data gathered by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), including relevant criminal convictions, cautions, police intelligence and other appropriate sources.  Using this information we will decide on a case-by-case basis whether each person is suited to this work.

Potential employees and volunteers will need to apply to register with the ISA and once the scheme has been fully rolled out, employers who work with vulnerable people will only be allowed to recruit people who are ISA-registered.

We believe that we are building a first class organisation that will deliver outstanding performance, the highest quality of service and be a place where people both have the opportunity for professional development and enjoy coming to work.  The challenges we face are significant and demanding as we begin to develop a new culture, systems and processes and in recruiting new people from a variety of backgrounds.  Building the ISA is a once in a lifetime opportunity that presents unique challenges and opportunities.
